Aromatics

Hand-rolled incense made for slower moments

Botanicals and essential oils, rolled by hand, packed in paper. A long burn, a cool ash and no perfume oil sprayed on a stick. Fifteen per cent of the profit goes to schools and children.

About the project

Incense we would burn at home

Aromatics started because the incense on the shelf was mostly a bamboo stick dipped in fragrance oil. This is the other kind: ground botanicals and essential oils rolled onto the stick, so the smoke smells of the plant rather than the solvent.

  • Real botanicals, not fragrance oil
Resins, woods, herbs and essential oils, rolled by hand onto the stick rather than sprayed on at the end.
  • A long burn
Hand-rolled sticks are denser than dipped ones, so they burn slowly and evenly instead of racing to the end.
  • A cool ash
The ash holds together and stays on the holder, which is the difference between a scented room and a scorched table.
  • Recyclable packaging
Paper and card, no plastic window, no foam. It goes in the kerbside bin when the box is empty.
Bundles of undyed incense sticks tied with bands and stacked, waiting to be finished.

Who makes it

Women’s cooperatives and small farms

The sticks are rolled by hand by women’s cooperatives, and the botanicals come from small farms rather than a commodity broker. Rolling is skilled work and it is paid as skilled work. We buy direct so that the money reaches the people doing it.

The give-back
